Mirra Andreeva Triumphs at Adelaide, Preps for Australian Open

Adelaide, Australia: In a decisive match, 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva solidified her status as a top contender by claiming her fourth WTA Tour title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over compatriot Victoria Mboko during the Adelaide International final on Saturday.

The Russian rising star, currently ranked eighth in the world, previously won consecutive WTA 1000 titles last year in Dubai and Indian Wells, now gearing up to face Paris Olympics silver medallist Donna Vekic in the Australian Open's opening round at Melbourne Park.

Despite a strong start from the 19-year-old Mboko, who established a 3-0 advantage in the first set, Andreeva rallied, taking control of the match by winning the next six games. The second set saw Andreeva break early and dominate, sealing her victory with a solid service finish.

During the award ceremony, Andreeva humorously reflected on her win, emphasizing her own determination, resilience, and the valuable support from her coach, former world number two Conchita Martinez.

Mboko required a medical timeout mid-match. The Canadian world number 17, notable for being the youngest player since Serena Williams to defeat four major champions in the Canadian Open last year, will face Australian Emerson Jones in her first round at the Australian Open.

Additionally, in the men's final, Czech player Tomas Machac emerged victorious, overcoming France’s Ugo Humbert with a score of 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.

In Auckland, Jakub Mensik clinched his second ATP title, defeating Sebastian Baez 6-3, 7-6(7), adding to his notable victory over mentor Novak Djokovic at last year’s Miami Open. Mensik is set to meet Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the Australian Open first round, while Baez will go up against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Meanwhile, in Hobart, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto celebrated her first WTA title of 2023, winning against American Iva Jovic with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in another pre-Australian Open event.
