The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has launched the Ruwwad AI Scholars (RAIS) Fellowship, a national initiative dedicated to fostering the next cohort of Emirati scholars and future educators in artificial intelligence.
This fully funded two-year postdoctoral program is targeted at UAE Nationals who have newly earned their Ph.D. degrees, providing a platform for undertaking advanced research at top-tier international institutions. This initiative not only enhances global exposure for scholars but also fortifies the research landscape of the UAE.
The RAIS Fellowship is inclusive of candidates from varied academic backgrounds, such as machine learning, data science, engineering, biology, economics, and physics. It emphasizes research that weaves together AI, computational tools, or quantitative methodologies across different fields.
Thamar Solorio, Vice Provost of Faculty Excellence and Advancement at MBZUAI, remarked that this initiative embodies a comprehensive vision for national development. She noted that the program aims to empower Emirati scholars to engage competitively on a global scale while substantially contributing to the UAE's research aspirations.
The fellowship closely aligns with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, which strives to position the UAE as a world leader in AI through persistent innovation, talent nurturing, and research distinction. As the first dedicated AI university in the world, MBZUAI is pivotal in driving this forward.
Candidates who exhibit notable research potential, independence, and alignment with national objectives will be prioritized. Upon completion of the fellowship, participants are anticipated to move into tenure-track faculty positions at MBZUAI and other leading institutions.
Currently, applications for the RAIS Fellowship are being accepted and are evaluated on an ongoing basis. Priority will be given to applications submitted by mid-April, with selected individuals expected to commence the program in Fall 2026.
