Venezuelan Leader Machado Defies Ban to Receive Nobel Prize

Post by : Mina Rahman

María Corina Machado, 58, the prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and engineer, secretly left her homeland after spending over a year in hiding to accept the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. Her journey defied a travel restriction that had been in place for more than ten years, imposed by Venezuelan authorities.

Upon her arrival in Oslo, Machado appeared on the balcony of the Grand Hotel, where Nobel laureates traditionally stay, to greet supporters. She waved and joined the crowd in singing Venezuela’s national anthem as people cheered and captured the moment on their phones. Later, she moved down to the streets, climbing over barriers to embrace and shake hands with those who had gathered in the cold to see her. Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, accepted the award on her mother’s behalf and delivered her speech, emphasizing the universal importance of safeguarding democracy. Machado’s words highlighted that “democracies must be ready to defend freedom to endure” and described the prize as a symbol of hope not just for Venezuela, but for the world.

Machado reportedly left Venezuela via boat, reaching the Caribbean island of Curacao before boarding a private plane to Norway. Her security team coordinated the escape, ensuring her safe passage despite strict government restrictions. During the ceremony at Oslo City Hall, a large portrait of Machado represented her presence. Joergen Watne Frydnes, head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, acknowledged the difficult choices faced by activists under authoritarian regimes, emphasizing that pursuing democracy often involves navigating impossible dilemmas.

In 2024, despite winning the opposition’s primary election by a significant margin, Machado was barred from running in Venezuela’s presidential race. Following the disputed election and the arrest of numerous opposition leaders, she went into hiding. Although Venezuelan electoral authorities and the Supreme Court declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner, opposition parties and international observers contested the results, citing detailed ballot-level evidence supporting their candidate’s victory. Machado stressed that “freedom is a choice that must be renewed every day, determined by our courage and willingness to defend it.”

Reflecting on Venezuela’s decline into authoritarianism, Machado criticized the weakening of institutions and the rule of law since Hugo Chavez’s presidency and during Maduro’s tenure. She pointed out that Venezuelans have had to make difficult decisions to protect democratic principles. After her Nobel win in October, Machado dedicated part of the honor to former US President Donald Trump. She has allied with political groups asserting that Maduro has ties to criminal organizations posing a security threat, despite skepticism from US intelligence agencies. In recent months, the US has conducted multiple military strikes on alleged drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, actions that have drawn criticism from human rights organizations, Latin American countries, and US Democrats, who condemned them as unlawful extrajudicial killings.
