US President Donald Trump’s current Asia tour reached a diplomatic juncture in Tokyo, where Japanese officials indicated they would back his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. At Akasaka Palace on Monday, Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signed a significant agreement on critical minerals and rare earths intended to deepen economic and strategic cooperation.
A White House statement said Japan has expressed its intent to nominate Trump, citing his recent peace initiatives across Asia and the Middle East. Tokyo has not yet issued an independent formal confirmation, but the announcement represents another notable endorsement of his diplomatic efforts.
Prime Minister Takaichi praised Trump for mediating the agreement between Thailand and Cambodia and for securing what she described as a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict. During the joint session she characterised the Middle East arrangement as an unprecedented contribution to regional stability.
Tokyo, long seen as a key US ally in Asia, underlined the strategic value of sustaining close ties with Washington under Trump’s leadership. Officials said the rare earths deal aims to strengthen global supply chains for critical resources and reduce reliance on geopolitical competitors.
Support for Trump’s Nobel prospects has grown recently, with countries such as Israel, Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand publicly announcing nominations, each pointing to his role in brokering diplomatic settlements. Trump has frequently presented himself as a peacemaker, asserting credit for ending prolonged disputes including the Gaza war and tensions along the India-Pakistan frontier.
The president’s Asia itinerary began in Malaysia, where he participated in the ASEAN Summit and helped facilitate the Thailand-Cambodia accord. After the Tokyo meetings, Trump is scheduled to proceed to South Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
While in Seoul he is also due to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a high-profile discussion expected to address trade issues, regional security and measures to stabilise economic relations between Washington and Beijing.
As Trump’s tour collects further nominations and diplomatic plaudits, it highlights a concerted effort to reposition US diplomacy around direct negotiation and mediation. Whether these endorsements will convert into a Nobel Peace Prize remains unclear, but they have amplified his international profile as a broker of deals.
