Severe 7.4 Earthquake Rocks Northern Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In northern Japan, a significant earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck on Monday, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency, leading to a tsunami warning for coastal areas.

The earthquake was registered at 4:53 PM local time (0753 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean, near Iwate Prefecture, with tremors felt as far away as Tokyo.

Officials indicated potential tsunami waves of up to three meters (10 feet) affecting the northern coastline, with the earliest waves expected to reach shore rapidly.

Residents living in coastal and riverside areas are being urged to evacuate to higher ground or designated shelter spaces. Experts warned of the possibility of repeated tsunami waves and advised staying in safe locations until the alert is lifted.

The Prime Minister’s Office has assembled a crisis management team in response to the incident, focused on monitoring and coordinating emergency measures.

Situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Japan is notorious for its seismic activity, experiencing around 1,500 earthquakes annually, which represent nearly 18% of the world's total seismic occurrences.

While most of these earthquakes are minor, significant tremors like the one in 2011, which reached 9.0 magnitude, can cause extensive destruction and loss of life, as seen in the Fukushima nuclear disaster that followed.

Authorities are actively monitoring developments and continue to emphasize adherence to safety protocols.
