Macron Urges Revisions to Trump's Peace Plan for Ukraine

Post by : Raina Nasser

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged for revisions to the U.S. peace plan concerning Ukraine, asserting that it ought to be more equitable and acceptable for both Ukraine and Europe. During a press conference on Tuesday, he underscored that, while the proposal is a positive step forward, certain aspects warrant additional dialogue and negotiation.

The United States recently unveiled a 28-point peace initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This proposal, however, took many officials in the U.S., Kyiv, and Europe by surprise due to its apparent inclination towards Russia’s interests. Macron emphasized that any resolution shouldn't imply Ukraine's capitulation or enforced concessions.

He clarified that it is solely up to Ukraine to determine which territorial compromises it deems acceptable. Macron stated, “What has been proposed provides insight into what might be palatable for the Russians. But does that mean it must be acquiesced to by Ukrainians and Europeans? Absolutely not.”

Moreover, Macron highlighted that Ukraine's foremost task post-conflict must be the reconstruction and enhancement of its military capabilities without limitations. He also pointed out that the frozen Russian assets currently held in Europe should exclusively be managed by European authorities.

Concerns have arisen among European leaders regarding the U.S. plan's suggestion to restrict the size of Ukraine's armed forces and confer control over the frozen Russian assets to Washington.

In his address, Macron also discussed the establishment of a future reassurance force that may be stationed “far from the front lines” once a peace agreement is enacted. This force would comprise personnel from Britain, France, Turkey, and other nations to aid in training and ensuring security in Ukraine following the conclusion of hostilities.

He noted that around 20 countries have already pledged various forms of support, including contributions of air, land, and maritime resources.

Macron's comments come ahead of an upcoming video conference involving nations prepared to assist in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. His statements underscore international leaders' continued efforts to reach a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict while safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
