Wide receiver Stefon Diggs of the New England Patriots is now facing significant legal challenges after being charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault. This follows an alleged altercation with his former private chef regarding compensation due for her services.
The charges were revealed during a court session on Tuesday in Dedham, Massachusetts. According to court documents, the incident is said to have occurred in late November as they argued about payments owed for work done at Diggs' residence.
In police accounts, the woman claimed that Diggs entered her room while she was working as his private chef, becoming upset during their conversation over unpaid wages. She stated that he struck her in the face and then placed her in a chokehold from behind, making it hard for her to breathe, and she feared losing consciousness.
Reports indicate that Diggs allegedly threw her onto a bed, dismissing her concerns regarding unpaid wages. Although she left her job and the Dedham residence, she returned in early December for her belongings but was allegedly told she needed to sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to receiving any payment, which she refused.
Although initially reluctant to take legal action, the woman later chose to file a criminal complaint, leading to the police charges against Diggs. His arraignment is set for January 23.
Diggs' attorney, David Meier, has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting they are unfounded, unproven, and stem from a financial dispute. Meier emphasized that the events described by the accuser did not happen and underscored Diggs' complete denial of any wrongdoing.
The New England Patriots have also released a statement expressing their support for Diggs as the legal process continues.
At 32 years old, Diggs is among the most successful wide receivers in the NFL, having achieved six straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2018 to 2023 while with Minnesota and Buffalo. After a brief period in Houston, he signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots, becoming a crucial asset for quarterback Drake Maye.
Despite his accomplishments on the field, Diggs has faced scrutiny for off-field incidents as well. Earlier this year, a video surfaced on social media showing him handing a suspicious pink substance to women on a boat, although that matter did not result in charges.
As this legal situation unfolds, it could impact Diggs’ future with the Patriots and his participation in the postseason.
