On New Year's Day, Kim Jong Un’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, visited North Korea’s Kumsusan Palace of the Sun for the first time, an event that experts interpret as a clear sign of her increasing prominence within the ruling elite and a possible future role as her father's successor.
Captured in recent state media images, the 13-year-old Kim Ju Ae appeared in the forefront during a ceremony alongside her parents, bowing at the mausoleum, which honors her grandfather, Kim Jong Il, and great-grandfather, Kim Il Sung, reinforcing the legitimacy of the regime.
Cheong Seong-Chang from South Korea’s Sejong Institute highlighted the significance of this visit, characterizing it as a strategic move prior to the forthcoming Workers’ Party congress. Typically, these key events are marked by Kim Jong Un's tributes at the mausoleum, emphasizing his leadership legacy.
The Workers’ Party congress, which happens every five years, aims to establish new political priorities and appoint key officials. While the exact date is yet to be announced, South Korean intelligence indicates it may take place in January or February. Speculation is growing that Kim Ju Ae might secure a significant position within the party, potentially even the role of first secretary—the second highest title—though some analysts note that her youth may confine her initial roles to lesser assignments.
Since her emergence in state media in late 2022, Kim Ju Ae has been frequently seen at crucial events, such as military parades and missile tests, alongside her father. Their relationship was clearly illustrated during the recent New Year’s festivities where she affectionately kissed him on the cheek.
Different analysts have varied assessments regarding her preparedness for leadership, but South Korea’s intelligence agency views Kim Ju Ae as the probable successor in a historically male-dominated power framework, marking a potential shift in the country's leadership dynamic.
