North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has personally observed the construction of a new nuclear-powered submarine and overseen the test-firing of long-range missiles, according to the country’s state media. The activities highlight North Korea’s continued focus on modernizing its military capabilities amid regional tensions.
State media KCNA reported that Kim visited a submarine construction site with his daughter, Ju Ae, who some analysts consider a potential successor. The vessel, weighing 8,700 tons, is designed to carry surface-to-air missiles and is equipped with a nuclear reactor. Experts say the submarine is almost ready for deployment.
On the east coast of the country, North Korea tested long-range missiles capable of hitting targets from 200 kilometers away. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the test and said they were aware of the launch preparations and had taken necessary precautions. KCNA described the missile test as an important step in developing new high-altitude strategic weapons.
Kim Jong Un emphasized the importance of building nuclear capabilities and modernizing the navy. He described these measures as essential for national security, citing what he called an unsafe and unstable global environment. North Korea also criticized South Korea’s plans to develop nuclear-powered submarines in partnership with the United States, saying these steps increase regional tensions.
In addition, North Korea condemned the recent arrival of a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine, the Greeneville, at Busan port for shore leave and supplies. The country’s state media described the visit as an act that escalates military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea also expressed concerns over Japan’s interest in nuclear weapons, claiming that it is encouraged by South Korea’s military developments.
Experts say Kim’s visit to the submarine construction site and missile test demonstrates a strong political message. The regime is signaling its commitment to strengthening defense capabilities and deterring perceived threats from neighboring countries and the U.S.
The development of nuclear submarines and advanced missiles is part of a broader strategy by North Korea to maintain military strength and project power in the region. Analysts warn that such actions may increase tension in East Asia and complicate diplomatic efforts for denuclearization talks.
By personally overseeing these projects, Kim Jong Un is reinforcing his image as a decisive leader focused on national security. The presence of his daughter also suggests continuity plans for leadership succession in the future.
North Korea’s military activities, including submarine development and missile testing, are likely to remain a key concern for neighboring countries, the United States, and international organizations monitoring regional security.
