North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took part in colorful New Year festivities in Pyongyang, which included fireworks, patriotic music, traditional dance performances, and a taekwondo showcase, as reported by state media on Thursday.
In his New Year's message, Kim celebrated the North Korean populace for their "remarkable successes and transformative changes" throughout 2025. He stressed the significance of national unity as the nation gears up for the imminent 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, slated for early 2026. This congress is set to be pivotal in defining the country’s strategic trajectory for the next five years, with a focus on vital areas such as nuclear and weaponry advancements as well as economic planning.
Kim’s address also reached out to North Korean soldiers currently deployed in Ukraine alongside Russian forces. He referred to these military personnel as the nation's "greatest strength and pride, a solid pillar," and expressed hopes for their safe return.
The forthcoming 9th Workers’ Party Congress is expected to lay out broad policies and initiatives that will guide North Korea's future across various sectors, emphasizing the leadership's priorities for both national growth and military enhancement.
