At the 65th anniversary of Kanad Hospital, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan celebrated a pioneering institution that transformed healthcare services in the Abu Dhabi region.
The event highlighted the hospital's significant journey since its inception in 1960, starting in a modest mud-brick guesthouse with the support of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It began as a clinic led by American physicians Dr. Pat and Marian Kennedy, laying the groundwork for the region’s present healthcare system.
In his speech, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that the establishment of Al Ain's first hospital, predating the UAE’s formation, showcased Sheikh Zayed’s revolutionary leadership and commitment to public health as vital for nation-building.
Dr. Richard Bramble, Managing Director of Kanad Hospital, welcomed prominent attendees, expressing pride in the hospital’s enduring legacy. He noted that the milestone represents years of commitment to high-quality medical care for the community.
A notable moment of the celebration was the awarding of the inaugural Marian Kennedy Award to Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, for her groundbreaking contributions to healthcare policy. The Pat Kennedy Award was given to Professor Dr. Humaid Obaid Al Shamsi for his advancements in internal medicine and cancer care.
The ceremony also honored long-serving employees with the Kanad Lifetime Service Award for their 35 years of dedication. Additionally, patients who successfully battled serious health issues received the Kanad Will to Live Award, showcasing their resilience and optimism.
For over sixty years, Kanad Hospital has emerged as a foremost healthcare institution in the Al Ain area. Spanning an area of more than 26,000 square meters, it boasts a workforce of over 80 physicians from 44 different nationalities, providing specialized care in fields such as pediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, vascular surgery, and ophthalmology.
Noteworthy is Kanad Hospital’s achievement as the first private hospital in Abu Dhabi to obtain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. It also earned global recognition for pioneering JCI Clinical Care Program Certifications for its neonatal respiratory distress treatment and natural birth after cesarean initiative.
With a steadfast dedication to its humanitarian mission, Kanad Hospital continues to be a cornerstone of healthcare in Al Ain, leading in childbirth, hosting the largest fetal medicine department, and operating a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, all reinforcing its commitment to excellence in patient care.
