The U.S. Justice Department has announced that it still needs to review a staggering 5.2 million pages of documents associated with Jeffrey Epstein. To manage this daunting task effectively, the department has enlisted 400 lawyers from several offices, with work extending into late January. As a result, the release of these documents will be postponed well past the December 19 deadline mandated by Congress.
These files pertain to criminal inquiries regarding Epstein, a deceased financier and registered sex offender who previously had connections with former U.S. President Donald Trump in the 1990s. The review engages legal experts from the Criminal Division, National Security Division, FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan.
The planned review will take place from January 5 to 23. Lawyers involved in the review process are expected to commit three to five hours each day, analyzing roughly 1,000 documents daily. To facilitate their involvement, the department has introduced telework options alongside time-off incentives.
Recently, the Justice Department disclosed that it has uncovered over one million additional files possibly linked to Epstein, further complicating the examination process that aims to safeguard the identities of victims.
Despite a legislative mandate from Congress demanding the public release of all documents linked to Epstein, persistent delays and extensive redactions have led to widespread frustration and ongoing debate. This law, which garnered bipartisan support, aimed to enhance transparency and initially set a deadline of December 19 for the document release.
Jeffrey Epstein was convicted in 2008 for procuring a minor for prostitution and had faced sex trafficking allegations prior to his death in 2019, which was ruled a suicide. President Trump has claimed that his relationship with Epstein concluded in the mid-2000s without knowledge of Epstein’s criminal acts.
The Justice Department is making every effort to finalize the review and release the documents as promptly as feasible; however, the extensive volume means that additional weeks will be required.
