Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced during a press conference in Jerusalem with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Israel is nearing the transition to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence that Israel is prepared to proceed. He also shared plans to meet with President Donald Trump later this month to explore potential peace avenues that have emerged following sustained pressure on Iran and its affiliates.
Trump’s initiative proposes the establishment of an International Stabilization Force, expected to include troops from various Muslim-majority nations, such as Indonesia and Azerbaijan. These forces would collaborate with Egypt and Israel to uphold order as the Israel Defense Forces exit the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the establishment of a transitional governing body referred to as the "Board of Peace" is part of the proposal. According to Netanyahu, the initial phase concludes once the last Israeli hostage is returned. The second phase mandates the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza, while the third phase aims for regional de-radicalization.
Netanyahu indicated that he will be discussing with Trump the timeline for the disarmament process and the potential for international forces to enter Gaza. They will also evaluate which countries could contribute if such assistance is deemed necessary. Netanyahu emphasized that all commitments for the second phase must be fulfilled before advancing further. Chancellor Merz concurred that Hamas cannot retain its position in Gaza but reiterated the importance of a lasting solution through the establishment of a Palestinian state—a recognition that Germany has withheld due to the prevailing conditions.
Netanyahu expressed Israel's willingness to forge peace with Arab nations and hopes for a viable solution with the Palestinians, although he asserted that Israel will resist any state formation that might jeopardize its security. Merz pointed out that while some neighboring nations seek peaceful relations, others do not, and stressed the necessity for the Palestinians to determine their future direction. Netanyahu reiterated Israel's commitment to broader regional peace and its ongoing efforts to ensure its long-term security.
As the situation unfolds, the existing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains fragile, with accusations of violations from both sides. Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani remarked on the uncertainty caused by ongoing Israeli strikes in the region. He highlighted the unresolved tensions between Iran and the United States. Qatar, alongside Egypt, is actively mediating in the ceasefire negotiations. The situation in Gaza is under close observation as stakeholders await the subsequent developments in the ceasefire strategy, amid preparations in Israel for potential political and security transitions. With an increase in international engagement, the forthcoming weeks will be critical in determining the stability of the ceasefire and the feasibility of a long-term solution for Gaza's future.
