Iranian Sailors Treated in Sri Lanka After U.S. Submarine Sinks Warship

Post by : Saif Nasser

Several Iranian sailors are receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Sri Lanka after surviving a deadly naval attack that sank their warship in the Indian Ocean. The incident has become one of the most serious naval events in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, and it has raised concerns about the conflict spreading to wider areas.

The attack happened earlier this week when a United States submarine launched a torpedo at an Iranian naval vessel traveling through international waters in the Indian Ocean. The ship, known as IRIS Dena, was badly damaged by the explosion and sank soon after the strike.

Reports say the vessel was sailing not far from the coast of Sri Lanka when the attack occurred. After the torpedo hit the ship, a distress signal was sent out, and the crew members tried to abandon the vessel as it began to sink.

Sri Lanka’s navy quickly began a rescue mission after receiving reports about the disaster at sea. Rescue ships and helicopters searched the surrounding waters and found survivors floating among debris from the destroyed ship.

Those rescued were taken to shore and transported to a major hospital in the southern Sri Lankan city of Galle. Doctors and medical staff immediately started treating the injured sailors.

Officials said that more than thirty sailors survived the attack and were admitted to the hospital. Most of them suffered from exhaustion, dehydration, and minor injuries caused by the explosion and the time they spent in the ocean before being rescued.

Doctors said the survivors were stable and expected to recover, although some remained under observation due to the shock and trauma caused by the incident.

The situation was far worse for many other crew members on board the vessel. Authorities reported that dozens of sailors died in the attack, while many others were still missing as search teams continued to scan the waters.

The warship was believed to have carried around 180 crew members. Rescue teams have recovered several bodies from the ocean, but officials fear that the number of deaths may rise as the search continues.

The United States later confirmed that one of its submarines had launched the attack. American officials said the strike was part of military operations aimed at weakening Iran’s naval capabilities during the current regional conflict.

According to U.S. military leaders, Iranian naval forces are considered part of a broader network of military power that Washington believes threatens regional security. By targeting warships and naval equipment, the United States says it hopes to reduce Iran’s ability to operate in strategic waters.

Iranian officials strongly condemned the attack and called it an act of aggression. Leaders in Tehran said the warship was sailing in international waters and was not engaged in any hostile action when it was targeted.

The sinking of IRIS Dena is considered a significant loss for Iran’s navy. The vessel was a modern frigate equipped with advanced radar systems and missiles designed for long-range naval operations. It had joined the Iranian fleet only a few years ago and was regarded as an important part of the country’s naval modernization.

Military experts say the attack is also unusual because submarine strikes against large warships are relatively rare in modern conflicts. Most naval battles today rely heavily on aircraft, drones, and missile systems, making this incident stand out as a major submarine engagement.

Although the attack happened far from the Middle East, it shows how the conflict involving Iran and its rivals is expanding into other regions. The Indian Ocean is one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, carrying large amounts of global trade, including oil shipments.

Because of this, any military action in these waters raises concerns about the safety of commercial ships and international trade routes.

Sri Lanka has focused mainly on humanitarian efforts following the incident. The country’s navy and emergency services worked quickly to save survivors and bring them to safety. Government officials said the injured sailors would continue receiving treatment until they are fit to travel.

Security has also been tightened at the hospital where the sailors are staying. Police and security personnel are guarding the area while the injured crew members recover.

Doctors treating the survivors said many of them were shaken by the experience. Some had spent hours in the ocean before being rescued, holding onto pieces of wreckage or life rafts.

For the families of those involved, the incident has been a painful and uncertain time. While some relatives are relieved that their loved ones survived, many others are still waiting for news about sailors who remain missing.

The search operation is still ongoing as rescue teams continue to scan the sea for any remaining survivors. Naval ships and aircraft are taking part in the effort to locate crew members who may still be alive.

At the same time, the attack has added another dangerous chapter to the growing conflict between Iran and its opponents. Analysts warn that if military operations continue to expand across the region and beyond, the risk of a wider war will become even greater.

For now, the injured sailors recovering in Sri Lanka are a reminder of the human cost of the conflict at sea. Their survival offers a small moment of relief in a crisis that continues to bring uncertainty and tragedy to many families and nations.
