Iranian Gunboats Fire on Tanker in Strait of Hormuz, Crew Safe

Post by : Raina Nasser

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz increased after Iranian gunboats fired on a commercial tanker, according to a UK maritime authority. The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety in one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations said that two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards approached the tanker without any warning. The captain reported that the boats opened fire without sending any radio message. The tanker was located about 37 kilometres northeast of Oman at the time of the incident.

Despite the attack, the tanker and its crew are safe. Authorities have started an investigation to understand what exactly happened. There has been no report of injuries or major damage so far, but the situation has added to rising tensions in the region.

The incident comes as Iran tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz again. Iranian military officials said the waterway is now under strict supervision and warned that restrictions will continue as long as the United States maintains its blockade on Iranian shipping.

US President Donald Trump has said that the blockade will remain in place until Iran agrees to a broader deal, including on its nuclear program. This ongoing standoff between the US and Iran has made the situation more tense and unpredictable.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil supply, with a large portion of the world’s oil passing through it every day. Any attack or restriction in this area can impact global energy markets and increase fuel prices.

This latest incident shows how fragile the situation remains. While the crew is safe, the firing on a tanker highlights the risks faced by ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz during times of conflict.
