Shubman Gill, the captain of India, acknowledged that there are “a lot of areas” needing enhancement following his team’s defeat in the ODI series against New Zealand on Sunday, January 19, 2026.
Virat Kohli showcased his exceptional talent with his record-extending 54th ODI century; unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as India succumbed to a 41-run loss in the series finale while chasing a daunting target of 338 runs. The home side was bowled out for 296 in 46 overs, on a pitch that heavily favored batters at the Holkar Stadium.
India's response started poorly, collapsing to 71 for four. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy (53) and Harshit Rana (52) put up a brave fight with their half-centuries, though the early losses made the chase insurmountable.
In the post-match discussion, Gill expressed disappointment with the overall team performance, especially after entering the match with the series tied at 1-1. He emphasized the importance of reflection and moving forward with improvements.
Gill pointed to Kohli's form as a significant positive, highlighting his contributions as a crucial asset for the team. He also commended Harshit Rana for his lower-order batting resilience, remarking on the challenges faced when batting at number eight. Additionally, he noted the encouraging performances of the fast bowlers throughout the series.
Regarding Nitish Kumar Reddy, Gill mentioned that the management is considering the long-term strategy leading up to the World Cup. He stated that the young player is being given opportunities to bowl more overs to gauge his experience and identify optimal team combinations.
These insights were echoed by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, who previously remarked on Nitish’s limited impact due to his game time.
New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell was awarded Player of the Series for his outstanding scores of 84, 131 not out, and 137. He credited staying present mentally as a vital factor in his successful performance and described capturing a series in India as especially rewarding.
New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell termed the series victory historic, marking their first ODI series win in India since 1988. He praised the team’s dedication to their strengths and noted their successful collaboration despite several key players being absent.
Bracewell acknowledged Mitchell's consistency and expressed satisfaction with the recognition he received for his contributions. He also highlighted the invaluable experiences gained by debutants during the series, showcasing the increasing depth of talent in New Zealand cricket.
Debutant Jayden Lennox, who played a vital role in New Zealand's comeback during the last two matches, shared that the series win highlighted the homegrown talent. He emphasized that unpredictability and execution are crucial for left-arm spinners in limited-overs cricket.
Lennox remarked on the electrifying atmosphere in India, representing a significant moment to be part of a series-winning team, and indicated that this result emphasized New Zealand’s capacity to shine in high-pressure situations.
