Leaders from Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Perlis have categorically denied allegations of a no-confidence motion targeting Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah, labeling such claims as unfounded and politically driven. This rumor emerged following the unexpected delay of the state legislative assembly meeting, which sparked speculation regarding possible discord within the ruling coalition.
Addressing the matter, PN Perlis chairman Shahidan Kassim emphasized that there has been no agreement or discussions regarding a no-confidence vote. He urged those perpetuating these rumors to provide verifiable evidence, underscoring that the narrative does not accurately portray the situation within the state government.
Shahidan reaffirmed the solid and cooperative relations between PAS and Bersatu, the principal parties in the Perlis government. He noted that PAS's central leadership has decisively maintained support for the current administration up to the next general election, dismissing any notions of imminent leadership changes.
He added that PAS holds a commanding majority in the state assembly, suggesting that if they wished to change the Menteri Besar, they could do so without necessitating a no-confidence vote. However, he reiterated that this strategy is not aligned with the party’s current priorities, which focus on unity and stability.
Shahidan referred to guidance from Abdul Hadi Awang, who has urged party members to foster strong internal relationships and respect the decisions from the central leadership. This advice, he remarked, underscores their commitment to avoiding unnecessary political strife and concentrating on governance.
The situation escalated when six PAS assemblymen individually requested clarification regarding the assembly session's postponement. Their inquiries added fuel to the speculation about discord within the coalition. However, Shahidan clarified that these actions were taken individually by elected representatives rather than reflecting an official party stance.
Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has dispelled claims that the assembly delay stemmed from fears of ousting. He clarified that the postponement was a decision based on administrative recommendations and legal considerations, aimed at ensuring effective governance. Overall, this situation illustrates how quickly political speculation can proliferate, even as coalition leaders stress that stability and unity are priorities.
