Indian Navy Veteran Stuck in Qatar Despite Death Sentence Relief

Indian Navy Veteran Stuck in Qatar Despite Death Sentence Relief

Post by : Raina Nasser

An Indian Navy veteran, Purnendu Tiwari, is still unable to return home from Qatar even after his death sentence was reduced earlier. His case has raised fresh concerns, as he is now being held in a separate legal matter, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Tiwari was one of eight former Indian Navy personnel arrested in 2022 on charges of espionage by Qatari authorities. In 2023, a Qatari court reduced their death sentences, allowing the other seven individuals to return to India. However, Tiwari remains in Qatar due to a different case that is not linked to the earlier charges.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Tiwari is currently facing a separate legal issue. He confirmed that the Indian government is in regular contact with Tiwari, his family, and his legal team. Officials are closely following the situation and providing support where possible.

Reports suggest that Tiwari has been accused of financial irregularities related to his former employer. His family, however, has raised serious concerns about his health and the conditions he is facing. His sister, Meetu Bhargava, said he has been in jail for several months and is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder along with other health problems.

She also claimed that the new case is connected to the earlier one for which he had already received relief. According to her, Tiwari had no role in the financial matters mentioned in the case. She has urged authorities to take urgent steps to bring him back to India.

This situation has drawn public attention, as people question why Tiwari is still unable to return despite earlier relief. The Indian government continues to monitor the case, while efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter through legal and diplomatic channels.
