ICC U19 World Cup: Afghanistan and England Reach Semi-Finals After Big Wins

Post by : Saif Nasser

Afghanistan and England have booked their places in the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup after strong performances in their Super Six matches. Their victories on Friday confirmed them as two of the best teams in the tournament so far, joining Australia in the final four.

Australia had already qualified from Group 1 earlier in the competition. Afghanistan claimed the remaining semi-final spot from the same group with a commanding win over Ireland. From Group 2, England became the first team to qualify, staying unbeaten and showing excellent balance in both batting and bowling.

Afghanistan’s match against Ireland was dominated by a brilliant batting display from Faisal Khan. Playing in Harare, Afghanistan elected to bat first but found themselves in early trouble at 27 for 2. At that point, Faisal stepped up and played a calm and well-planned innings.

Faisal scored a magnificent 163 runs from 142 balls, hitting 18 fours and one six. This knock became the highest individual score by an Afghan batter in the history of the Under-19 World Cup. He built important partnerships, first with Uzairullah Niazai and later with captain Mahboob Khan, who added 89 runs. Together, Faisal and Mahboob took full control of the match and pushed Afghanistan to a strong total of 315 for 7 in 50 overs.

Ireland’s bowlers tried to fight back, with Reuben Wilson and Olly Riley taking three wickets each. However, the target was simply too big for Ireland to chase.

When Ireland came out to bat, they struggled from the start. Afghanistan’s bowlers kept tight lines and applied constant pressure. Ireland were bowled out for just 124 runs. Although Marko Bates and Reuben Wilson showed some resistance in the middle order, Afghanistan’s bowlers ensured there was no comeback. Abdul Aziz and Aqil Khan led the bowling attack and sealed a massive 191-run victory.

In the other key match, England defeated New Zealand by 65 runs in Bulawayo. New Zealand, already out of semi-final contention, played with freedom and managed to restrict England to 234 for 7. England’s batters did not rush but built their innings carefully. Ben Dawkins, Ben Mayes, and Caleb Faloner all played useful knocks to give England a defendable total.

New Zealand’s Mason Clarke was the standout bowler, taking two wickets and keeping the run rate in check. However, England’s bowlers completely changed the match during the chase.

Manny Lumsden delivered a stunning bowling performance, taking five wickets for just 17 runs. His spell broke the backbone of New Zealand’s batting lineup. Despite a fighting partnership in the middle order, New Zealand were bowled out for 169 runs, falling short of the target.

With these results, the semi-final picture is becoming clearer. Australia, Afghanistan, and England have already qualified. The final semi-final spot will be decided in the much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan. India currently have an advantage with more points and a better net run rate, making the upcoming clash a virtual knockout.

As the tournament moves closer to its final stages, the Under-19 World Cup continues to showcase young talent from around the world. The strong performances by Afghanistan and England highlight the growing depth and competitiveness of youth cricket on the global stage.
