In the early hours of Thursday, residents of Northern California were startled awake by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake that reverberated throughout a significant area, including San Francisco. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic event occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m., with its epicenter located a mere mile (1.6 kilometers) from Boulder Creek, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Witnesses recounted feeling their homes shake for several seconds, with reports spanning a 100-mile (161-kilometer) radius. Boulder Creek, a community of about 5,000 situated around 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco, found itself closest to the epicenter. Residents as distant as Petaluma, roughly 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the city, also felt the earthquake's tremors.
Numerous individuals stated that they received earthquake alerts on their smartphones prior to experiencing the shaking of their beds and windows.
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of notable damage or injuries.
This earthquake follows a trend of seismic activities observed in the region. Earlier this year, a cluster of minor earthquakes unsettled the San Francisco Bay Area, the strongest measuring 4.2 near San Ramon. Experts have noted that the area east of San Francisco has been experiencing “earthquake swarms”—a series of small quakes occurring closely together in time—for many years.
Seismologists are keeping a vigilant eye on the area for any aftershocks and recommend that residents remain ready for minor tremors.
