The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to respond soon to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to shift Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches away from India. While Bangladesh asked for its games to be moved to Sri Lanka due to security concerns, signs suggest that the ICC is unlikely to accept this proposal. Instead, the global cricket body may suggest alternative venues within India itself.
Bangladesh is currently scheduled to play its group-stage matches in Kolkata and Mumbai. The BCB approached the ICC after expressing concerns linked to player safety and recent developments involving Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. However, according to reports, the ICC believes there is no strong reason to move the matches out of India completely.
Rather than approving Sri Lanka as a replacement host, the ICC is expected to suggest Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram as alternate venues. These cities have a strong record of hosting international cricket and are considered safe and well-organised. The move appears to be an effort to address Bangladesh’s concerns while keeping the tournament plan largely unchanged.
The BCB has already shared mixed views on these options. Its president, Aminul Islam, said that Bangladesh is not taking the decision alone and that the government’s opinion also matters. He added that discussions are still ongoing and no final stand has been taken. The Bangladesh government has also said it expects direct communication from the Indian government regarding security arrangements.
The ICC may point out that Bangladeshi officials are already working in India without issues. Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat recently officiated an international match in Vadodara and is expected to be part of the officiating team during the T20 World Cup as well. This could weaken the argument that India is unsafe for Bangladeshi players.
With less than four weeks left before teams arrive for practice sessions, the ICC is under pressure to resolve the issue quickly. Any delay could affect planning, logistics, and preparation for the tournament.
This situation highlights the delicate balance between security concerns and tournament stability. While player safety is important, major changes at this late stage can create confusion. The ICC’s expected decision aims to protect both the spirit of the game and the smooth conduct of one of cricket’s biggest events.
