Serena Williams, renowned for her seven Grand Slam titles, is gearing up for a noteworthy comeback at the 2026 Australian Open. Having last participated in 2021, when she faced a second-round defeat to Italy's Sara Errani, Williams will be aiming to leave her mark. With 21 appearances under her belt, she remains on the hunt for the elusive trophy, having finished as runner-up twice — in 2003 against her sister and in 2017.
At the age of 45, Williams is poised to become the oldest female player to compete in the main draw of the Australian Open, eclipsing the previous record set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she departed in 2015.
Expressing her enthusiasm about her return, Williams stated, “I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eager to compete this summer. I have so many cherished memories from this place, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has played such a significant role in my career.”
Along with her Australian Open appearance, Williams has received a wildcard for the Hobart International, an event starting on January 12, featuring other notable champions like Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.
As anticipation builds among tennis enthusiasts globally, Williams’ return signifies not only her enduring commitment to the sport but also a pivotal moment in tennis history, demonstrating that age is merely a number in the quest for excellence.
