Arkansas Gas Station Hits $1.8B Powerball Jackpot

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A monumental moment unfolded in Arkansas as one lucky player secured a breathtaking Powerball jackpot exceeding $1.8 billion, the second-largest in the annals of US lottery history.

The winning ticket successfully matched all five white balls along with the Powerball in the Christmas Eve drawing, bringing an end to a lengthy nearly three-month dry spell without a jackpot winner in the widely followed multi-state game.

Winning Ticket Purchased in Cabot

Sold at a Murphy USA gas station in Cabot, a small town located northeast of Little Rock with a population nearing 27,000, the ticket's purchase location raises the intriguing possibility of the winner being from outside the area.

According to Murphy USA's Alejandra Barron, there was a notable surge in customers on Christmas Eve, many drawn specifically to buy Powerball tickets. This isn’t the first lottery success for Murphy locations; earlier in 2024, a Murphy Express store in Sugar Land, Texas, sold a Mega Millions ticket worth $800 million.

Community Abuzz with Speculation

Mayor Ken Kincade of Cabot expressed the pervasive excitement and speculation within the community, stating, “Everyone’s talking about it. It’s all over social media. People are guessing who the lucky winner might be.”

While the mayor is hopeful that the prize goes to a local resident, he is realistic about the chances given the station's proximity to a major highway, suggesting that the winner could be a passing traveler.

Next Steps for the Winner

The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery informs that the winner has 180 days to come forward and claim the jackpot. Arkansas law permits winners of amounts over $500,000 to remain anonymous for up to three years, with a six-month timeline if the winner is an elected official or related to one.

It’s important to note that significant taxes await the winner. Arkansas has an individual income tax bracket of 3.9%. Should the winner opt for the lump-sum payment of roughly $834.9 million, state taxes will exceed $32 million. Any outstanding tax obligations or legal issues may also affect the final amount received.

A Unique Christmas Eve Jackpot

This achievement marks the first occasion a Powerball jackpot has been won on Christmas Eve since 2011, even though the game has seen wins on Christmas Day four times, the most recent being in 2013.

Powerball, with odds set at 1 in 292.2 million, is famous for producing immense jackpots. The game toughened its odds in 2015 to help foster these historic prize levels while still improving chances for smaller wins.

Tickets for Powerball are sold at $2 each across 45 US states, as well as Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Winning Numbers

The numbers drawn on Christmas Eve were 04, 25, 31, 52, and 59, accompanied by the Powerball number 19.

For now, Arkansas continues to wonder who the winner is, as they decide how and when to claim one of the largest lottery prizes in the nation’s history.
