Soccer enthusiasts intending to watch World Cup matches across the United States should brace for expenses that extend beyond just their tickets, as transportation fees at specific venues are projected to escalate considerably.
Authorities have announced that fans making the journey from New York City to MetLife Stadium will incur approximately $150 for a round-trip train ticket on match days. This represents a dramatic increase from the standard fare of $12.90 for the brief 15-minute ride from Penn Station in Manhattan.
Home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, the stadium is slated to host eight World Cup matches, culminating with the final on July 19. With limited parking accessible, officials estimate that roughly 40,000 fans per match will depend on public transport.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill supported the fare rise, arguing it is essential to avoid enduring financial hardships for the state’s transit system. Transit officials project that transporting fans during the tournament will require around $62 million, of which only $14 million is financed through outside sources.
"This isn’t price gouging—we are merely recovering our costs," expressed NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri.
Diverse Strategies Among Host Cities
Fare structures vary in other cities hosting the matches. In Massachusetts, fans heading to Gillette Stadium will encounter express bus fares priced at $95 and round-trip train tickets costing $80—quadrupling the usual charges.
Conversely, cities such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia have committed to sustaining standard transit fares, backed by nearly $100 million in federal funding meant to enhance transportation during the event.
More economical choices exist elsewhere; for instance, Kansas City is presenting $15 round-trip shuttle services, while Houston aims to maintain its current fare levels, ranging from $1.25 to $4.50 for bus and rail services.
FIFA Raises Concerns Over Fare Increases
The surge in pricing has incited a dispute with FIFA, which asserts that previous agreements mandated free transport for attendees. The organization expressed astonishment regarding New Jersey’s fare decision, noting its efforts in securing federal funding for host locations.
Additionally, New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the fare increase, labeling it unreasonably high for such a brief distance.
Fans Left with Few Alternatives
Alternative travel methods remain pricey, too. Parking near the venue, including at the nearby American Dream Mall, is scarce and priced at approximately $225 a spot, further inflating the costs for attendees.
