Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women's cricket team, made history on Saturday as she became the most successful captain in women's T20 International cricket. This milestone was reached during the third T20I against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, where India secured a commanding eight-wicket victory to win the five-match series 3-0.
With this triumph, Harmanpreet surpassed the previous record held by Australia’s Meg Lanning. Currently, she boasts 77 victories in 130 T20Is, with 48 losses and five no-results, giving her a win percentage of 58.46. Lanning concluded her own remarkable run with 76 wins in just 100 matches.
Sri Lanka Restricted to 112/7
Batting first after India won the toss, Sri Lanka found it difficult to gain momentum against a resolute Indian bowling lineup. Imesha Dulani was the top scorer with 27 runs off 32 deliveries, while Hasini Perera (25 off 18) and Kavisha Dilhari (20 off 13) were the only other players to exceed 20 runs. Sri Lanka ended their innings at 112/7.
The Indian bowlers were exceptionally efficient; Deepti Sharma shone with figures of 3/18, marking her as the first Indian to achieve 150 T20I wickets in either men’s or women’s cricket. Fast bowler Renuka Singh also delivered an outstanding performance, finishing with 4/21.
Shafali Shines in Dominant Chase
The chase was powered by an explosive performance from opener Shafali Verma, who scored an undefeated 79 runs off just 42 balls, including 11 boundaries and three sixes. Captain Harmanpreet supported her with a quick 21 off 18 as India reached the target in only 13.2 overs, losing just two wickets.
Shafali’s impressive form this year includes 333 runs from eight T20Is at an average of 55.50 and a strike rate exceeding 173, featuring three half-centuries with a top score of 79*.
Aiming for World Cup Success
Following her guidance of India to its first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title earlier this year, Harmanpreet now sets her sights on securing a T20 World Cup title. The tournament is slated for June–July next year in the UK, where India will face tough opponents in Group A, which includes Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan, with two more teams yet to be announced.
With milestone achievements and a squad in excellent form, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team appears poised to pursue yet another historic championship on the international stage.
