The escalation of the H3N2 influenza strain has led to a notable increase in hospital admissions in the United States, urging Canadian health authorities to advise vigilance as they anticipate a similar rise in cases in the near future.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 7.5 million individuals in the U.S. have contracted the flu this season, with over 81,000 requiring hospitalization. Hospitalization rates for the flu have surged to unprecedented levels in various U.S. regions, indicating a challenging flu season ahead.
Data for the week ending December 20 reveals that 25.6% of flu tests in the U.S. had positive results—a sharp increase from 15.7% the week before and just 9% two weeks earlier. During the same week, 19,053 Americans were admitted to hospitals due to flu-related conditions, tragically including five pediatric fatalities.
The main strain causing the current wave of illness is the H3N2 subclade K, recognized for its increased severity and widespread repercussions.
Canadian health professionals, including Dr. Fahad Razak from St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto, caution that Canada may face a similarly severe flu season. “The evidence strongly indicates that we’re looking at an unusually intense flu season here as well,” Dr. Razak remarked.
He noted recent flu trends emerging from Europe, the U.S., Australia, and Japan, labeling it as one of the most severe flu seasons in recent memory. The close proximity and free movement across the U.S.-Canada border, especially during the holiday time, create ideal conditions for speedy flu transmission.
“Preventing the spread becomes nearly impossible when illness rates are surging on one side of the border,” Dr. Razak pointed out.
A recent report from Health Canada indicates that flu hospitalizations have nearly doubled within a week, with infection rates rising by nearly 30%. In the week ending December 13, 27.7% of flu tests processed in Canada yielded positive results, totaling 11,646 new flu cases. Upcoming data for the Christmas period is expected shortly.
Dr. Razak also highlighted the urgent need for vaccinations, especially as children prepare to return to educational settings. “If your child hasn’t received their vaccination yet, now is the optimal time to do so. Vaccination is our most effective defense against severe illness,” he urged.
Amid rising infections propelling increased hospital admissions, experts are emphasizing that timely vaccinations and ongoing caution are essential for mitigating the flu's effects this season.
