Recently, Dubai hosted a captivating closing session at the World Sports Summit, where six legendary football figures who’ve all raised the FIFA World Cup trophy came together. These icons shared their compelling stories, reflecting on their journeys with national teams and the essential values that led to their success.
The esteemed panel featured France’s Didier Deschamps, Brazil’s Cafu and Ronaldo, Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro, along with Spain’s Carles Puyol and Andres Iniesta. Moderated by Italian star Alessandro Del Piero, the collective achievements of these legends are immense, boasting 810 international caps, 10 World Cup titles, 10 UEFA Champions League victories, 35 domestic league trophies, and five Golden Boot awards.
Each shared that winning the World Cup isn’t merely an endpoint but a culmination of relentless effort, sacrifice, and fundamental human values such as leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Didier Deschamps, who triumphed as a player in 1998 and as a coach in 2018, noted how the joy of lifting the trophy remains the same, despite the differing roles. He stressed the importance of teamwork, referring to France’s 1998 victory over Brazil as a realized dream, while emphasizing coaching requires meticulous attention to every detail.
Cafu, the captain of Brazil’s 2002 winning squad, described football as an essential aspect of life in Brazil. He attributed their success to strong team unity and strategic clarity that instilled confidence in facing rivals, contrasting this with Brazil’s 1998 efforts.
Ronaldo shared his experience of overcoming a serious injury before the 2002 tournament, discussing how determination and willpower fueled his return. His outstanding performance, scoring eight goals, showcased his resilience and aided Brazil in regaining their title.
Fabio Cannavaro reminisced about Italy’s victory in 2006, highlighting that their triumph stemmed from a complete team effort rather than just Italy’s renowned defense, alongside an inspiring coach. He expressed hope that Italy’s renewed vigor will restore the nation’s World Cup glory.
Carles Puyol pointed to the chemistry among players from rival clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona as pivotal to Spain’s 2010 World Cup championship, underscoring the importance of team spirit and collaboration. Andres Iniesta recalled the thrill of scoring the winning goal in the 2010 final as Spain's pinnacle football moment, a memory that still resonates profoundly after 15 years.
This extraordinary assembly of champions served as a reminder that behind every trophy lies dedication, unity, and respect—values that continue to inspire generations on and off the field.
