A humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Afghanistan, as lethal floods and severe weather wreak havoc across various provinces, claiming the lives of at least 61 individuals and injuring 116 more.
The Afghanistan Red Crescent Society reports that four individuals remain unaccounted for, as search and rescue operations are underway to evaluate the extent of the catastrophic damage caused by continuous rainfall and flash floods.
The infrastructure and agricultural sectors have suffered immense damage. It is estimated that 2,448 homes are either partially or completely destroyed, prompting numerous families to seek refuge in alternative locations. Additionally, around 26,841 jeribs of farmland have been devastated, striking a significant blow to the already fragile agricultural economy.
The rural economy has taken another hit with the loss of over 1,000 livestock, exacerbating the financial burdens faced by communities reliant on agriculture and livestock farming.
Officials have cautioned that conditions could worsen, with more heavy rainfall expected, elevating the risks of further flooding, landslides, and additional storm-related destruction.
While emergency responses are in progress, the magnitude of this calamity underscores the pressing need for comprehensive humanitarian support and effective disaster management strategies in the affected areas.
