Delhi Airport Struggles with Flight Disruptions Amidst Heavy Fog

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Wednesday, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport faced severe disruptions in flight schedules as thick fog shrouded the region. A total of 78 arriving flights and 70 departures were cancelled, alongside two flights redirected to alternative airports due to low visibility.

IndiGo, a leading domestic airline, issued an advisory indicating that passengers might face extended delays throughout the afternoon, largely attributable to poor visibility affecting Delhi and other northern Indian airports. Domestic flights connecting to Pantnagar and Dehradun were also scrapped due to these challenging conditions.

The airline emphasized its commitment to orderly and comfortable travel, coordinating flight departures and arrivals closely. IndiGo staff were deployed at strategic locations within the airport to assist travelers.

By the early afternoon hours, visibility saw a noticeable improvement, which facilitated a smoother resumption of flight operations. The airport’s official notice urged passengers to regularly check with their airlines for real-time updates and mentioned that ground staff were actively providing support across all terminals.

Amid the fog, flights were managed under CAT III instrument landing system protocols, which can lead to further delays and cancellations. The airport expressed its regret for the disruptions and reassured travelers of thorough support during such adverse weather conditions.

Earlier that morning, the capital and adjoining areas were blanketed by dense fog, significantly reducing visibility and impacting traffic and daily life across several critical regions.

As the day progressed, visibility gradually improved, aiding the stabilization of flight activities at one of India's busiest airports.
