Washington State Flood Alert After Levee Breach Along Green River

Post by : Saif Nasser

Severe flooding concerns emerged in Washington state after a levee broke following several days of heavy rainfall. The breach led authorities to issue flash flood warnings and evacuation orders in affected areas, while emergency crews rushed to repair the damage.

The incident occurred at the Desimone Levee in Tukwila, a city located along the Green River, about five miles south of downtown Seattle. Officials said a section of the levee, roughly the size of a car, was washed away by strong and fast moving floodwaters.

Emergency management officials said repair work began immediately but could take several hours to complete. Crews used heavy machinery to place large sandbags into the damaged section to prevent the gap from growing wider and to reduce the risk of further flooding.

The National Weather Service said the flood warning linked to the levee failure would remain active until late Monday night. Residents living in low lying areas were advised to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions if conditions worsened.

The Washington National Guard was deployed to assist local authorities in King County. Guard members had already been helping residents affected by flooding in other parts of the state over the weekend. Their duties included supporting evacuations and helping ensure public safety.

Officials said the flooding was caused by a series of powerful atmospheric river storms. These systems pull large amounts of moisture from the ocean and can release intense rainfall over short periods. Some areas of the Pacific Northwest received up to 20 inches of rain in just one week.

Authorities said they had been monitoring levees across the state for days due to rising rivers and saturated ground. Residents were urged to stay updated through official weather alerts and local emergency announcements as repair work and monitoring continued.
