The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has increased its investigative presence in Minnesota to look into a suspected fraud scheme involving public money. FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency has sent more personnel and resources to the state as part of what he described as a serious and growing investigation.
Speaking through a post on social media, Patel said the FBI had “surged” its efforts in Minnesota after reports suggested that federal funds meant for social services may have been misused. He did not give many details, saying the investigation is still active. The FBI also declined to comment further when asked by reporters.
The investigation has drawn national attention because it comes during a time of strong political debate. Federal officials have recently described Minnesota as a key area for fraud cases linked to social service programs. According to reports, some of the cases involve large sums of government money that were meant to support childcare and community services.
One online video shared widely on social media showed daycare centers that appeared to be closed or inactive, even though they had reportedly received public funding. The video was shared by Republican lawmakers, including U.S. Representative Tom Emmer and Vice President JD Vance, who called for answers from state leaders.
Many of the people charged so far in major fraud cases in Minnesota are said to be of Somali descent. This has caused concern among immigrant-rights groups, who argue that the investigations are being used to unfairly target the Somali community. They warn that focusing on one group could lead to fear, stigma, and discrimination.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s office has not issued an immediate response to the FBI director’s comments. However, reports say there have been disagreements in recent months between federal and state officials over how these investigations are being handled and communicated to the public.
President Donald Trump has also spoken about the Minnesota cases, using them to criticize both the state government and the Somali immigrant community. His comments have added to the tension, as critics say such statements risk painting an entire community with the same brush.
As the investigation continues, many observers are calling for a careful and fair approach. While fraud involving public funds is a serious crime that must be addressed, community leaders and rights groups stress the importance of protecting innocent people and avoiding broad generalizations.
The coming weeks are expected to bring more clarity as investigators gather evidence and officials decide what actions to take next. For now, Minnesota remains under close watch as the FBI deepens its probe into the alleged fraud scheme.
