A tragic midair collision involving two helicopters occurred close to Hammonton Municipal Airport in Hammonton, New Jersey, resulting in one pilot’s death and critically injuring the other. The unfortunate incident took place around 11:25 a.m., as reported by local officials.
Witnesses present at the scene managed to capture chilling footage, revealing one helicopter spinning out of control as it plunged toward the earth. Emergency teams swiftly arrived and worked tirelessly to put out the flames engulfing one of the choppers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that the incident involved Enstrom helicopters: an F-28A and a 280C, both occupied solely by their pilots. Unfortunately, one pilot died at the site, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital due to life-threatening injuries.
Local residents expressed their shock at this tragic event. One café owner recounted how both pilots often visited for breakfast before their flights. “They were familiar faces here,” the café owner recalled. “We watched them take off, and it was horrifying to see one spiral down, followed closely by the other.”
Another local resident recounted the moments prior to the crash, describing how the first helicopter flipped upside down before spiraling uncontrollably downwards. Moments later, a loud crack was heard as the second helicopter also lost control and plunged to the ground.
Hammonton is a quaint community of about 15,000 inhabitants nestled in Atlantic County, approximately 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. It is renowned for its agricultural roots and proximity to the expansive Pine Barrens, a dense wilderness area spanning over one million acres.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Experts in aviation safety anticipate that a review of communications between the pilots and an analysis of any available cockpit video footage will be paramount in determining the cause—particularly to ascertain whether visibility complications or a failure to 'see and avoid' each other contributed to the crash. Such midair collisions are often associated with pilots’ inability to notice one another in time to avoid such tragedies.
At the time of the crash, weather conditions were reported as mostly cloudy, but visibility remained good with light winds, indicating that weather was likely not a significant factor in this incident.
As the investigations continue, the local community mourns the loss of one of their own, hoping for the recovery of the other pilot, while authorities work diligently to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
