In a dramatic twist to the Harvey Weinstein legal saga, a significant family quarrel is unfolding between two sisters intricately tied to the case.
Ewa Sokola, a cardiologist from Wrocław, Poland, has lodged a defamation suit against her sister Kaja Sokola in a Manhattan federal court. Submitted on Tuesday, the lawsuit accuses Kaja of making malicious public statements that Ewa claims have severely tarnished her reputation and impacted her medical career.
Overview of the Dispute
Kaja Sokola took the stand in Weinstein's latest criminal trial, accusing the producer of sexual assault in 2006. Ewa was called as a supporting witness but her testimony inadvertently helped Weinstein's defense.
After the trial, Kaja publicly disapproved of Ewa’s statements, arguing they undermined her claims and weakened the prosecution. Court documents reveal Kaja referred to her sister's testimony as a personal "betrayal" and alleged Ewa intentionally omitted journal entries relevant to the incident.
Claims in the Defamation Suit
Ewa Sokola's lawsuit asserts that Kaja’s statements constitute libel that has led to public disdain, mockery, and professional humiliation in Poland. She contends these remarks have adversely affected her reputation in Wrocław's medical community, resulting in lost patient referrals and staff decline, with ongoing negative implications for her practice.
The suit further alleges that Kaja made false accusations of severe misconduct against Ewa, including homicide, theft, fabrication of medical records, and collusion with Weinstein's defense team, seeking unspecified damages.
Attempts to reach Kaja Sokola’s legal representatives for comment were made on Thursday and Friday, but no responses had been received at the time of publication.
Trial Verdict and Implications
This lawsuit follows a mixed verdict issued in June. Weinstein was found guilty of forced oral sex against production assistant Miriam Haley but was acquitted of charges related to Kaja's accusations. Both incidents reportedly took place in 2006.
The jury could not reach a verdict regarding a third charge involving allegations from former actor Jessica Mann, leading to a mistrial after the jury foreperson opted not to proceed.
Weinstein's sentencing is pending, with his legal team requesting the conviction be overturned, citing claims from two jurors of being coerced into a guilty vote. Judge Curtis Farber will rule on this request on January 8.
Context Surrounding the Allegations
During the trial, Kaja claimed that Weinstein arranged for her to appear as an extra in The Nanny Diaries and later invited her and Ewa to a meeting. She testified that Weinstein lured her to his Manhattan hotel room under the guise of discussing a script, where she asserts the assault occurred days before her 20th birthday.
After the trial, Kaja publicly contended that Ewa's testimony provided material for Weinstein's defense, particularly a personal journal detailing previous assaults not related to Weinstein, which the defense leveraged to counter the prosecution's narrative.
Legal and Personal Implications
What started as testimony in a high-profile criminal case has devolved into a painful family rift. As the legal repercussions of the Weinstein case continue to unfold, Ewa's defamation lawsuit introduces a new, personal layer to a multifaceted legal drama.
