Explosions Echo Through Caracas Amid Escalated U.S.-Venezuela Friction

Post by : Mina Rahman

In the early hours of Saturday, around 2 a.m. local time, residents in Caracas reported hearing a minimum of seven explosions accompanied by low-flying aircraft. The origins of these explosions are yet to be determined, with Venezuelan and U.S. officials not providing immediate clarification.

Following the blasts, people from various areas emerged from their homes, visibly anxious and seeking safety. This development occurs amidst rising tensions between Venezuela and the United States, primarily associated with ongoing U.S. military initiatives targeting vessels implicated in drug trafficking.

Just the day before, officials in Venezuela expressed readiness to engage in discussions with the U.S. regarding drug smuggling. Conversely, President Nicolás Maduro criticized the United States for attempting to instigate a regime change to seize control of Venezuela’s extensive oil resources, pointing to a prolonged campaign of pressure that started with significant U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean Sea last August.

Maduro faces narco-terrorism charges from the U.S. A recent drone strike, believed to have been executed by U.S. intelligence, hit a dock used by alleged Venezuelan drug cartels. This marked the U.S.'s first direct operation on Venezuelan soil since targeting suspected drug-smuggling ships began in September.

The U.S. has also confiscated oil tankers under sanctions and implemented blockades to amplify economic strain on Venezuela. Since the beginning of September, U.S. forces have executed over 35 strikes against vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, leading to more than 115 fatalities, according to U.S. sources.

These military actions are in response to a significant concentration of U.S. forces near South America, including the November deployment of the most advanced U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, bringing troop levels in the region to their highest in decades.

U.S. officials assert that these actions are vital to curbing drug trafficking into America, framing their involvement as part of an “armed conflict” against drug cartels.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media has broadcast images of the explosions in Caracas, reflecting Iran's enduring alliance with Venezuela, driven by mutual opposition to U.S. policies in the area.
