TransJakarta is progressively being acknowledged as more than just a transportation system; it serves as a formidable economic driver for Indonesia. A new study underscores the network’s substantial contributions to national productivity while alleviating commuters' daily challenges in Jakarta.
Research from the University of Indonesia's Institute for Economic and Social Research indicates that TransJakarta has generated economic returns that greatly surpass the subsidies it has received. Between 2015 and 2024, it benefited from Rp 23.1 trillion in subsidies while generating Rp 73.8 trillion in national economic output and creating Rp 33.9 trillion in added value, showcasing a significant multiplier effect.
For daily commuters, the advantages are both immediate and tangible. Jakarta residents experience remarkable monthly savings on transportation costs, while those traveling from nearby areas also reap financial benefits. This shift has made public transportation a more appealing and economical alternative to private vehicles.
The findings challenge conventional transportation policies in Indonesia, which have historically prioritized fuel subsidies and road expansions. While such measures may offer temporary relief, they often lead to persistent issues like traffic congestion, pollution, and increased reliance on imported fuels.
TransJakarta provides a more sustainable solution by tackling various urban challenges at once. It enhances mobility, minimizes environmental impact, and fosters economic activity across multiple sectors.
In addition to direct savings for commuters, the network also aids in job creation and improves public health. It is projected to support tens of thousands of jobs each year while reducing healthcare costs through lower emissions and better air quality in the city.
The success of TransJakarta highlights the importance of investing in public transportation infrastructure to achieve expansive economic and social benefits. It stresses the need for policymakers to rethink their priorities, emphasizing integrated transit solutions that champion both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
