In a significant move, Dubai Municipality, in partnership with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), has initiated a tree-planting program aimed at introducing 20,000 trees throughout Dubai. This initiative commemorates His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's two decades of leadership.
The event kicked off at the Quranic Garden located in Al Khawaneej, with community support from Furjan Dubai. The tree planting engaged several high-ranking officials, including Directors General and CEOs of various Dubai Government entities, students, and members of the community.
Key dignitaries at the ceremony included Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary-General of the Executive Council of Dubai; Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority; Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al-Falasi, Director General of Dubai Government Human Resources; Dr. Alawi Alsheikh Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority; Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality; and Aisha Abdulla Miran, Director General of KHDA, among others.
This initiative aligns with the Urban Environment aspect of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, focusing on increasing green spaces, enhancing urban aesthetics, and promoting a healthier ecological environment.
Dubai Municipality is responsible for providing a diverse range of ornamental trees, fruit trees, and shrubs, which will be planted in strategic locations such as Al Barsha South, Al Barsha Pond Park, Nakheel Park in Al Aweer, Al Mizhar Second, and various other parks around the emirate.
To promote sustainability, the municipality plans to implement smart irrigation systems and IoT technologies to maximize water conservation and ensure optimal tree growth. Moreover, long-term maintenance strategies, consistent monitoring, and a dedicated support hotline will be established.
KHDA will be facilitating the involvement of schools and universities by coordinating sapling distribution and guiding institutions for organized and safe planting exercises. This initiative encourages students to engage actively and learn about environmental stewardship.
Furjan Dubai is spearheading community engagement, managing volunteer activities, overseeing sapling distribution points, and using digital platforms to promote upcoming events and public participation.
This campaign embodies Sheikh Mohammed’s vision, underlining that sustainability is a collective duty of both the government and the community. By planting 20,000 trees in public parks, neighborhoods, and educational institutions, this initiative aims to create a meaningful environmental and social legacy while enhancing Dubai’s overall quality of life.
