Driver Faces Charges After Fatal Crash Involving Boxer Anthony Joshua in Nigeria

Post by : Mina Rahman

Authorities in Nigeria have formally charged a driver linked to British boxing champion Anthony Joshua after a catastrophic road incident in Ogun State.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the 46-year-old driver, was operating a Lexus SUV on the bustling Lagos-Ibadan expressway when it collided with a stopped truck. Joshua, alongside two associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, was in the vehicle at the time.

Tragic reports indicate that both Ayodele and Ghami died instantly due to the crash, while Joshua and Kayode escaped with minor injuries and were subsequently treated at a nearby hospital.

After his hospital discharge on Thursday, Kayode was taken into custody and charged with reckless driving. He was granted bail set at five million naira, pending the fulfillment of two surety conditions, and remains in detention until then.

Traffic investigators have revealed that the SUV was reportedly speeding at the time of the accident and that a tire failure contributed to the loss of control that led to the collision.

Following his release from the hospital, Joshua visited a funeral home to pay respects to his late friends, with arrangements for their repatriation to the UK reportedly underway.

This incident has spotlighted pressing road safety issues on Nigeria's highways, particularly concerning excessive speed and hazards presented by stalled vehicles. Joshua's current location has not been disclosed, nor have there been updates from his representatives.
