A significant number of migrants are unaccounted for following the capsizing of a vessel carrying over 200 individuals near Gambia's coast, as reported by the Defence Ministry's statement on Friday. The disaster struck on Wednesday when the boat became stranded on a sandbank.
So far, rescue teams have successfully saved 96 people, with seven bodies recovered. Among the survivors, 10 are noted to be in grave condition and are currently receiving critical medical assistance.
This boat was reportedly transporting migrants from several African nations. Every year, numerous individuals from Gambia, Senegal, and adjacent West African countries risk this treacherous journey to reach the Canary Islands, which lie under Spanish jurisdiction. Their aim is to enter the European Union in hopes of securing improved living standards and opportunities.
This tragic incident underscores the perilous conditions that migrants endure in their quest for a better life at sea. Authorities are intensifying their search and rescue operations, urging heightened awareness and support for safe migration strategies.
