The thyroid gland may be small, but it plays a very important role in keeping the body healthy. It controls how fast or slow the body uses energy, helps manage weight, supports growth, and keeps hormones balanced. When the thyroid does not work properly, people may feel tired, gain or lose weight suddenly, or experience mood changes.
According to Dr Manoj Vithlani, a senior consultant physician at HCG Hospitals in Ahmedabad, medical treatment is important for thyroid problems, but daily food choices also matter a lot. He explains that eating the right nutrients can help the thyroid produce hormones properly, reduce swelling around the gland, and support overall health.
One of the most important nutrients for the thyroid is iodine. The thyroid needs iodine to make hormones. If the body does not get enough iodine, metabolism can slow down. Dr Vithlani suggests using iodised salt and eating foods like dairy products and eggs in moderation to meet daily iodine needs.
Another key nutrient is selenium. This mineral helps change inactive thyroid hormones into active ones, which helps improve energy levels and metabolism. Foods such as Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, fish, and whole grains are good natural sources of selenium and can help protect the thyroid from damage.
Zinc also plays a role in hormone balance and immune strength. Dr Vithlani recommends including foods like pumpkin seeds, lentils, chickpeas, and almonds in daily meals. These foods support thyroid function while also helping the body fight infections.
Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants are also helpful. Brightly coloured foods such as berries, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, and bell peppers help reduce inflammation and protect thyroid tissue from harm caused by free radicals. Eating a variety of these foods supports overall wellness along with thyroid health.
Healthy fats are another important part of a thyroid-friendly diet. Dr Vithlani notes that foods like avocados, olive oil, walnuts, and fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel help with hormone balance and improve the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. These fats are also good for heart health.
Lean protein sources like chicken, fish, paneer, and legumes help maintain muscle strength and steady metabolism. Many people with thyroid problems experience muscle weakness, and enough protein in the diet can help prevent this issue.
Whole grains such as oats, quinoa, and whole wheat provide long-lasting energy and support digestion. Good digestion is closely linked to hormonal balance, making whole grains a smart choice for thyroid health.
Dr Vithlani also advises caution. Too much soy, heavily processed foods, and large amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables may interfere with thyroid function in people who already have iodine deficiency. Balance and moderation are key.
He reminds readers that while healthy eating can strongly support thyroid health, ongoing symptoms should never be ignored. Consulting a doctor is essential for proper diagnosis and long-term care.
This information is meant to guide healthy choices and does not replace professional medical advice. Anyone with thyroid concerns should always seek guidance from a qualified healthcare provider.
