HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), inspected the Hassyan seawater desalination plant, which is now about 90% complete. The full project is on schedule to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027.
This desalination facility, with an investment of AED 3.377 billion, is one of the world’s largest seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) plants. It marks DEWA’s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) initiative, symbolizing a significant achievement in Dubai’s water infrastructure.
Accompanying Al Tayer were prominent figures such as Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power; Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation; Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power; Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA; along with the Board of Directors of Hassyan Water Company A and senior DEWA staff.
Al Tayer accentuated that this project embodies the vision and strategic goals set forth by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The objective is to establish a modern and integrated energy and water infrastructure that supports Dubai’s swift growth and increasing water requirements, aligning with the UAE's water security and sustainable development endeavors.
During the visit, officials from Hassyan Water Company A delivered comprehensive presentations, emphasizing the project’s vital role in enhancing Dubai’s smart desalinated water infrastructure and the Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030.
Al Tayer further reiterated DEWA’s commitment to employing energy-efficient RO desalination technology, which uses considerably less energy than conventional multi-stage distillation methods. Looking ahead, DEWA intends to raise its desalination capacity by 240 million imperial gallons per day by 2030 through seawater reverse-osmosis technology. Additionally, DEWA aims for 100% of its desalinated water production to be powered by a mix of clean energy and waste heat, reinforcing its sustainability goals.
