Tragic Death of Tripura Student After Racial Assault in Uttarakhand Raises Concerns

Post by : Mina Rahman

The brutal racial assault of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma from Tripura, which led to his death, has drawn harsh criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Anjel and his brother Michael were attacked with knives and blunt instruments in Dehradun. Gandhi labeled the incident a "horrific hate crime" and accused the ruling BJP of fostering a climate of intolerance targeted at the youth.

Anjel suffered grave injuries, including multiple stab wounds, and tragically passed away on December 26. His brother Michael also endured injuries to his head during the altercation. The violent incident occurred on the evening of December 9, as the brothers were in Selaqui, Dehradun for work.

Police investigations revealed the violence followed a dispute involving the Chakma brothers and local men who hurled racial insults. The situation escalated when the brothers defended themselves, resulting in Anjel being stabbed while Michael was attacked with a blunt object.

Following the incident, law enforcement arrested five individuals, including two minors now held in a juvenile facility. One suspect, a Nepalese citizen, has escaped, and authorities are offering a reward of Rs 25,000 for information that leads to his capture. Coordination with Nepalese officials is also underway to locate the fugitive.

The shocking death has incited outrage in Tripura and throughout the Northeast, with various student and civil groups demanding strict punishment for those involved. They are calling on the Central Government to implement decisive actions against ongoing racial discrimination affecting Northeastern students across India.

Rahul Gandhi extended his condolences, asserting that "India thrives on unity and respect, not fear and hatred." He urged the nation to confront rising intolerance rather than ignoring hate-related incidents against its citizens.

BJP’s General Secretary in Tripura, Bipin Debbarma, expressed his sorrow over Anjel’s death, noting that the Tripura Chief Minister has liaised with his Uttarakhand counterpart to ensure justice is served.

This incident has amplified the crucial need to tackle racial discrimination and uphold the safety and dignity of all individuals, particularly those from the Northeast residing elsewhere in India.
