At least 18 people have died and three others have been injured in a serious road accident in northeast Egypt. The crash happened on the 30 June Axis highway, south of Port Said, on Thursday afternoon.
According to local officials, a large transport truck collided with a passenger pickup vehicle. The smaller vehicle was carrying workers, many of them fishermen, who were heading to jobs at fish farms in the area. The impact of the crash was severe, leaving the pickup badly damaged.
Emergency teams quickly arrived at the scene. Ambulances rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while police officers secured the area and directed traffic away from the wreckage. Doctors worked to treat the injured and confirm the number of victims.
Authorities said many of those who died are believed to be from the town of El Matariya in Dakahlia province. Families in the area were left in shock as news of the tragedy spread. Officials have expressed condolences and promised financial support for the families of the victims.
An investigation has begun to find out what caused the crash. While the exact reason is still unclear, road accidents in Egypt are often linked to speeding, driver fatigue, or poor road conditions. Large trucks and heavy vehicles are commonly involved in such incidents, especially on busy highways.
Road safety remains a major concern in Egypt. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives in traffic accidents across the country. The government has worked in recent years to improve highways and enforce traffic laws more strictly. Still, deadly crashes continue to happen.
This tragic event once again highlights the importance of safe driving and stronger safety measures. Better road maintenance, careful driving, and strict enforcement of traffic rules can help prevent such losses in the future.
For the families who lost loved ones, this is a time of deep grief. For the nation, it is a reminder that road safety must remain a top priority.
