Dark circles under the eyes are a common concern that can make the face look tired and the eyes appear smaller. While many try creams or treatments, the real solution starts with understanding the root cause. Dermatologist Dr. Amit Bangia from Asian Hospital explains why dark circles appear and how simple home remedies can help.
Common Causes of Dark Circles
Genetics and Skin Anatomy
Some people naturally have thin skin under the eyes or deeper under-eye hollows. This makes blood vessels more visible, causing dark circles early in life. Dr. Bangia stresses that this is not always pigmentation but increased vascular visibility.
Pigmentation-Related Causes
Dark circles can result from excess melanin around the eyes. Factors like allergies, frequent eye rubbing, hormonal changes, chronic inflammation, and sun exposure can make this worse. Daily sun protection is recommended, especially under the eyes.
Vascular Congestion
Blood pooling under the eyes due to stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, or sinus issues can make dark circles more noticeable. These are often bluish in tone and make the eyes look fatigued.
Ageing and Volume Loss
As people age, the natural fat and collagen under the eyes decrease. This can create hollows known as tear-trough deformities, which make dark circles more visible even without pigmentation issues.
Lifestyle and Medical Conditions
Screen time, irregular sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption, and dehydration can worsen dark circles. Persistent or progressive dark circles may also indicate underlying health issues like anemia, thyroid problems, chronic sinusitis, or allergies.
Home Remedies to Reduce Dark Circles
While in-clinic treatments may provide faster results, simple home remedies can help improve the appearance of dark circles over time:
Cold Compress: Reduces swelling and inflammation of blood vessels.
Caffeine-Based Applications: Green tea bags or caffeine serums boost blood circulation.
Aloe Vera Gel: Moisturizes and soothes the delicate under-eye skin.
Vitamin E or Almond Oil: Nourishes and repairs skin when applied at night.
Adequate Sleep: Ensure 7–8 hours of sleep daily to reduce puffiness.
Hydration and Sun Protection: Keep the skin hydrated and protected from the sun to prevent further pigmentation.
Dr. Bangia emphasizes that identifying the main cause is key to treating dark circles effectively. Combining lifestyle adjustments with home remedies can gradually improve under-eye appearance and keep the skin healthy.
