Common Causes of Dark Circles

Some people naturally have thin skin under the eyes or deeper under-eye hollows. This makes blood vessels more visible, causing dark circles early in life. Dr. Bangia stresses that this is not always pigmentation but increased vascular visibility.
Pigmentation-Related Causes
Dark circles can result from excess melanin around the eyes. Factors like allergies, frequent eye rubbing, hormonal changes, chronic inflammation, and sun exposure can make this worse. Daily sun protection is recommended, especially under the eyes.
Vascular Congestion
Blood pooling under the eyes due to stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, or sinus issues can make dark circles more noticeable. These are often bluish in tone and make the eyes look fatigued.
Ageing and Volume Loss
As people age, the natural fat and collagen under the eyes decrease. This can create hollows known as tear-trough deformities, which make dark circles more visible even without pigmentation issues.
Lifestyle and Medical Conditions
Screen time, irregular sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption, and dehydration can worsen dark circles. Persistent or progressive dark circles may also indicate underlying health issues like anemia, thyroid problems, chronic sinusitis, or allergies.
