Essential Heart Tests to Lower Heart Attack Risk According to Cardiac Surgeon

Post by : Saif Nasser

Globally, heart disease ranks as a top cause of mortality. Often, heart conditions progress quietly, with individuals unaware until serious symptoms arise. For this reason, medical professionals emphasize the significance of early screening and regular monitoring, particularly for those over 40.

Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, a heart surgeon, highlights the importance of assessing heart health prior to commencing aggressive medications or treatments. Several straightforward and non-invasive tests can reveal whether the heart functions properly or if arteries are beginning to obstruct. Early detection can avert serious complications down the line.

Below are three essential tests recommended by healthcare professionals to evaluate heart health:

1. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
The ECG is a fundamental test that records the electrical rhythms of the heart. Small electrodes are attached to the chest, arms, and legs, allowing the device to monitor heartbeats.
This test aids in identifying problems such as arrhythmias or prior cardiac issues. It’s a quick and easy procedure requiring no special prep.

2. Echocardiogram (ECHO)
An ECHO employs ultrasound to generate real-time images of the heart. Sound waves create visuals that illustrate the heart's pumping efficiency and valve functionality.
It assists physicians in recognizing conditions like weakened or thickened heart muscles—providing clarity on the heart's size, shape, and role.

3. Cardiac CT Angiogram and Calcium Scoring
These imaging techniques enable doctors to examine the heart's arteries comprehensively. They reveal any cholesterol or calcium accumulation in blood vessels.
A CT Angiogram can identify narrowing arteries, potentially preventing heart attacks, while a calcium score gauges existing plaque in arteries.

Medical experts suggest that consistent testing, a nutritious diet, exercise, and avoiding tobacco can collectively diminish heart disease risks. Even without symptoms, individuals over 40 should consider these tests to better assess and safeguard their cardiac health.
