Master Lock Comanche and defending champion LawConnect engaged in an intense battle on Saturday during the 80th edition of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, moving into its second day.
Just over 27 hours after departing Sydney Harbour on Friday, Comanche maintained a slim lead of approximately four nautical miles over LawConnect in the 628-nautical-mile race, which culminates at Constitution Dock in Hobart, Tasmania.
LawConnect faced significant challenges overnight, enduring a broken mainsheet and halyard amid rough conditions. Fortunately, the crew managed to execute repairs at sea, allowing them to stay competitive.
“We experienced a few hurdles that slowed us down, and Comanche has clearly performed well,” remarked LawConnect skipper Christian Beck. “It’s a bit disheartening, but that’s the nature of offshore racing. We’re still very much in contention.”
Under the guidance of Matt Allen and James Mayo, Comanche demonstrated impressive speed as the leading yachts navigated the challenging Bass Strait, the unpredictable waters separating mainland Australia from Tasmania.
With over half the distance covered, Hong Kong’s SHK Scallywag 100 secured third place, closely followed by the 88-foot Lucky, led by skipper Bryon Ehrhart.
Race officials reported that the leaders are expected to reach Hobart late on Sunday afternoon, assuming current weather conditions hold. This timeline suggests that the finish will be beyond the long-standing race record, which demands favorable downwind conditions to challenge.
The fleet has faced several retirements, including Supermaxi Wild Thing 100, which withdrew due to rigging issues, although all crew members were reported safe as they headed back toward Sydney. Inukshuk, under Robert Large’s command, also retired after getting caught in a fishing net, raising fears of potential rudder damage.
LawConnect led the fleet out of Sydney Harbour on Friday, vying for a third consecutive line honours victory. Despite the demanding overnight conditions, they were not as extreme as last year’s harrowing opening night, which resulted in the tragic loss of two sailors during severe storms.
Earlier in the race, crews paid their respects to the victims of the December 14 terror attack, scattering rose petals off the coast near Bondi Beach as the fleet sailed by.
Last year, LawConnect, owned by Australian tech entrepreneur Beck, won line honours in the impressive time of 1 day, 13 hours, 35 minutes, and 13 seconds. The overall race record of 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes, and 24 seconds, established in 2017, remains safe given the current racing conditions.
