Unveiling the Colossal 'Star of Pure Land': World’s Largest Purple Star Sapphire

Post by : Mina Rahman

In an extraordinary reveal, Sri Lanka has introduced a remarkable Purple Star Sapphire weighing 3,563 carats, touted as the largest natural stone of its type ever recorded. Dubbed the “Star of Pure Land,” this exceptional gem is capturing global interest due to its vast size and distinctive characteristics.

With its flawless round shape, the gem displays a captivating six-rayed asterism — a star-like design that emerges when light interacts with its surface. This unique trait differentiates it from other star sapphires, elevating its exclusivity. Renowned gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe stated, “This represents the largest purple star sapphire identified, with a clearly defined six-ray star pattern.”

Unearthed in 2023 from a gem pit in Rathnapura, noted as the “city of gems,” the stone was acquired alongside other precious specimens. After nearly two years, its remarkable value was acknowledged, leading to validation from two separate gemological institutions.

The current owners, who have opted to stay unidentified for safety reasons, have appraised the sapphire’s worth between $300 million and $400 million based on evaluations from international authorities. Sri Lankan sapphires are renowned globally for their vibrant hue, clarity, and natural luster, enhancing the gem's esteemed status.

The “Star of Pure Land” is set to be presented for sale, expected to become a significant addition to the collections of discerning buyers and investors.
