China has carried out its largest military exercises ever near Taiwan, firing rockets into nearby waters and surrounding the island with warships and aircraft. The drills have raised serious concerns in the region, as they appear to practise how China could block Taiwan in a real conflict.
The Chinese military said the live-firing exercises lasted for about 10 hours on Tuesday. Rockets were launched into the sea north and south of Taiwan, while fighter jets, bombers, destroyers, and amphibious assault ships moved into key positions around the island. China named the operation “Justice Mission 2025.”
Taiwan’s defence ministry confirmed that Chinese live-fire drills took place close to its northern waters. Officials said some debris entered Taiwan’s nearby maritime zone, which lies just outside its territorial waters. Taiwan closely monitored the situation to see whether China would fire missiles over the island, as it did during earlier drills in 2022.
Chinese military videos showed mobile rocket launchers firing into the sea. These launchers are believed to be capable of striking targets across Taiwan. Taiwanese security officials said China was also simulating attacks on important defence systems, including U.S.-made weapons used by Taiwan to protect its coastline.
The drills began only days after the United States announced a large new arms package for Taiwan. China strongly opposes any foreign military support for the island and sees such moves as interference in its internal affairs. Taiwan, however, says it needs these weapons to defend itself.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te said the island’s armed forces were ready to protect the country, but he stressed that Taiwan does not want conflict. He said the government would act calmly and responsibly while keeping the public safe.
The military activity affected travel and shipping. Taiwan’s aviation authority said several flight routes were disrupted, though most international flights continued. Flights to nearby islands close to China were suspended, affecting thousands of passengers. At sea, Chinese coastguard ships and Taiwanese vessels followed each other closely, leading to tense stand-offs.
Experts say a real blockade would cause major global problems. The Taiwan Strait is one of the world’s most important trade routes, with trillions of dollars’ worth of goods passing through every year. Any serious disruption could hurt global supply chains and economies far beyond Asia.
China also used the drills to display new military equipment, including large amphibious ships designed to land troops, vehicles, and helicopters. Analysts say these exercises show China’s growing military strength and confidence.
While China says the drills are defensive, many observers believe they are meant to send a strong message to Taiwan, the United States, and the wider world. As tensions continue to rise, the situation around Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive flashpoints in global politics.
