Dubai: The Burj Al Arab, a symbol of luxury and architectural brilliance, is set for its first significant restoration since its debut in 1999. Jumeirah Group announced this landmark decision on April 15, marking an important phase in the hotel's storied 27-year legacy.
This iconic sail-shaped hotel, synonymous with Dubai’s luxury tourism, will undergo meticulous restoration in a phased manner expected to span approximately 18 months.
Heritage-Centered Restoration Approach
Jumeirah Group has emphasised that preserving the hotel's unique identity is paramount, while modernising vital interior areas. The process will be conducted with a focus on craftsmanship, akin to restoring a treasured piece of art, thereby respecting the original design rather than opting for an extensive overhaul.
Thomas B. Meier, the CEO of Jumeirah Group, expressed that this restoration heralds a renewed chapter for the esteemed property, ensuring it continues to epitomise luxury and design excellence for upcoming generations.
Upgrading Interiors While Preserving Luxury
The plan includes refreshing the hotel's interiors, ensuring the opulent design elements that characterise Burj Al Arab remain intact. With its intricate marble finishes, gold leaf detailing, and Swarovski crystals, the hotel has maintained its reputation for unparalleled luxury since its inception.
As an all-suite establishment, the hotel features 198 duplex suites, towering at 321 metres on an artificial island, making it one of the globe's most photographed structures.
Tristan Auer to Spearhead Restoration
The esteemed Parisian interior architect Tristan Auer will lead the restoration efforts. Highly regarded for his work on historical properties, such as the Hôtel de Crillon, his involvement follows a thorough selection process.
Auer remarked on the honour and commitment he feels in leading the inaugural restoration of this iconic structure, promising to preserve its legacy while infusing it with contemporary updates.
Burj Al Arab's Prominence to Continue
Throughout the restoration, Burj Al Arab will remain a key feature of Dubai's skyline. The phased restoration aims to minimise disruption, maintaining the hotel's worldwide allure.
Context: Recent Fire Incident
Earlier this year, on March 1, Dubai officials reported a minor fire on the hotel’s exterior, sparked by debris from an intercepted drone amid regional unrest. Emergency personnel responded effectively, and no injuries were reported.
