Australian law enforcement has established that the pair responsible for the tragic shooting at a Jewish gathering on Bondi Beach acted independently, and are not part of any extensive terrorist network. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996, with 15 lives lost.
The suspects have been identified as Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed. They traveled to the Philippines on November 1, first arriving in Manila before proceeding to Davao City on the same day, where they remained until returning to Sydney on November 29. According to local authorities, there is no indication that they received any form of training or support while in the Philippines. Reports suggest their activities were restricted mainly to their hotel, showing limited public engagement.
Krissy Barrett, the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, addressed the ongoing investigation and revealed that CCTV footage from their time in the Philippines has been shared with Australian officials. Early assessments suggest that both men acted independently. Authorities have found no evidence linking Sajid and Naveed Akram with broader terrorist cells or that they received directives from others for the attack. However, Barrett highlighted that their visit to the Philippines was likely not for leisure, though further details remain undisclosed.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the attackers were seemingly influenced by ideologies associated with the Islamic State. During the attack at the Hanukkah event, Sajid Akram was shot dead by police, while Naveed Akram was taken to a hospital where he survived. Naveed faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and a count of terrorism, with a court appearance scheduled for April.
The Philippine immigration bureau noted that Sajid Akram entered using an Indian passport, whereas Naveed used an Australian passport, both listing Davao as their destination before heading back to Australia. While Davao has regions associated with Islamist militant activities, there is no evidence connecting the Akram family to those groups or any other terror organizations.
The investigation continues, with officials cautioning that more evidence may surface as they work diligently to address all facets of the attack to ensure justice and public safety.
