In the wake of head coach Javier Mascherano's unexpected resignation, co-owner David Beckham has called for patience, indicating that the club will take its time in finding a successor.
Mascherano's departure, announced earlier this week and attributed to personal issues, came shortly after a 2-2 match against the New York Red Bulls. Reports indicate that the decision was made over the weekend, surprising the organization during a crucial early season period.
Meanwhile, sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has stepped in as interim manager. With a current record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 3 draws, the club is preparing for an upcoming match against the Colorado Rapids.
In remarks to CBS Sports, Beckham described Mascherano’s exit as a challenging time for the franchise, particularly following the coach's pivotal role in securing their first MLS Cup title in 2025.
“Mascherano is a fantastic individual and an adept coach. He earned the respect and admiration of the players, but such situations are part of football,” Beckham stated. “Our priority now is to allow time for reflection before making any decisions about a new head coach.”
At 41, Mascherano was appointed in November 2024, taking over from Gerardo Martino. His tenure was marked by significant achievements, steering a Lionel Messi-led squad to an MLS Cup victory, a Leagues Cup final, and a CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal.
This position was Mascherano’s first as a head coach at the club level, having previously led Argentina’s youth teams since 2021. Under his management, these teams reached the Round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the quarterfinals in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Additionally, chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will temporarily take on extra duties to assist with the club's transition.
With this change, Inter Miami is now navigating a phase of realignment, aiming to uphold performance levels while strategically planning future coaching leadership.
